Ear Candling Conference

November 18 - 19, 2006

The first-ever Ear Candling Conference took place in Reepham near Norwich. The humble, and much vilified, little candle has managed to pull speakers from Switzerland, Canada, United States of America and Belgium together in one place, prepared to share their thoughts and research data with the world.

Ear candling is no longer regarded as an "ear cleansing" tool as it has become very obvious that there is no suction element to the candle's function, nor is there a heating up of the ear canal. Ear candling is a simple, but extremely effective, energetic tool to influence health in a positive way. The noted effects stretch over millennia and across the whole world, covering most great cultures this small planet has ever known.

Jili Hamilton, the author of the first book ever written about ear candling, told the delegates how her path in life was totally changed by ear candling. She recounted many fascinating stories surrounding ear candling that she has come across in her search for more information. She also led us through the difficulties that someone encounters who is writing a book about a subject no one knows anything about.

M Harmony PhD shared her search result looking into verifiable ear candling data. She researched what constitutes a safe and healthy candle as well as the origins of ear candling and the ancient practices that have lead to ear candling. She caused controversy when she stated that the Hopi Native American tribe has been stunned by the revelation that they were supposed to have lent their name to the most famous ear candle in the world. Michelle said she had spent a lot of time with the Hopi's to find out that the Hopis have never used ear candles and have never heard of it.

Greg Webb is a Touch for Health tutor and examiner in his homeland Canada and combined with his passion for ear candling he has collated an incredible amount of data regarding the specific effects and pathways in which the body responds to ear candling. He showed how not only the lymphatic drainage improves, but also how the immune system is strengthened, the endocrine system enhanced, and the central nervous system is empowered. He shared his thoughts on how the energetic input is transferred via the chakra system, the meridian and the nervous system into the physical aspects of life.

Patrick Quanten concentrated on explaining in simple terms some relevant facts of quantum physics and new biology. All matter is energy condensed and all cells "listen" to everything that is going on in their environment. The combination of these allow the energetic influence of ear candling to be felt throughout the whole body, both via a direct influence on the cells and via the overall information distributed through the nervous network. He also showed that in free burning open candles only white smoke appeared at the bottom of the candle. The matter found inside the candles after burning only occurs by compressing the smoke. He suggested a relationship between what was found inside the burned candle and the changes made in the auric field of the person being candled.

Plenty of questions are still left open. Opinions still differ, but the delegates have agreed to continue to gather data and to share their knowledge and experience. To this effect it was suggested to set up a separate website dedicated to verifiable information on ear candling and a place where people could share their questions and experiences with each other. It was generally felt that the time has come to tell the truth about ear candling and to ensure that it becomes a safe and self-regulated therapy with therapists who uphold serious professional values.

Ear Candling - The Debris

by Patrick Quanten MD

As some of you may have gathered from my other writings about ear candling I am fascinated by the debris left in the bottom of the candle. What does it mean? Nothing to some. Not much to others. Unreliable they tell me. And I accept all of that, but at the same time I do not believe that anything in Nature is without meaning. I just hate being too stupid to understand a silly little thing like that.

As everything in life is energy, so must this be. We can already prove that the debris is produced out of the smoke that spirals down the inside of the candle. If we remove all obstructions, such as filters and narrow ends on candles, and have the candle burn as a straight tube (be careful not to have any threads hanging in the way!), then we observe white smoke escaping from the bottom end of the candle but no powder or fat globules fall away from the candle. Only smoke is produced by the burning process itself, no other debris.

The debris appears as soon as we put an obstruction in the way of the smoke. In effect, we "compress" the smoke and material things appear, as is the general rule of how all material comes into existence. This is a physiological process whereby all matter is generated out of energy by either increasing pressure or decreasing temperature, or both. No difference here inside the candle!

The other conclusion we can already come to is that whatever the bottom of the candle "produces" as debris comes from the smoke itself and therefore relates directly to the changes made in the air around the candle that has been burned. This means that the air in which the candle burns is the essential basic ingredient of the debris. Or, to put it more exactly, the debris depends entirely on the air in which the candle burns and the burning process itself.

Observations of many candling sessions have given us the following information about the content of the burned candle. First of all, we see a great difference in collected debris from person to person, candled in the same or similar circumstances and surroundings. Secondly, within one person we notice a change in debris with changing symptoms.

This has led me to believe that the debris has some relation to the way the person feels and functions. As everything about matter, including our bodies, is energy, it stands to reason that the energy field of a person differs by the way he/she feels. In ancient medical systems people were used to describing symptoms in terms of energies. A water problem was described as heavy and damp. The more water there is in the atmosphere, the easier it is to manifest it in liquid form by ways of increasing pressure and/or decreasing temperature (the dew on the grass, for instance, appears in the time just before dawn when the temperature is at its lowest). The effect of making a fire in a damp atmosphere is to reduce the water content and therrefore make a noticable difference to the air itself, while adding heat to a dry atmosphere is not going to feel like much of a change.

The other observation is that various candles consistently deliver different debris results from other types of candles. Some makes of candles always end up with less debris than others. When examined it becomes clear that those candles are made differently. And one of the things that we noticed is that the candles that deliver consistently less content after burning are all heavier types, especially in the type and amount of cloth that has been used. This tends to slow down the burning process while it takes more energy to burn the material. The denser the matter, the more difficult to burn. Wood is more difficult to burn than hay. Coal is more difficult to burn than wood. It takes more energy, more heat, to burn away denser matter, including ear candle material.

There are lots of theories floating around about the origin of the debris and the meaning, some of which reach the "doesn't matter" point. This of course is true, but not clever if you want to understand the process so you can learn what is true about ear candling and what isn't. Indeed, to my every day life it really doesn't matter whether the earth is flat or round, but believing it to be flat is not going to give me all the information or answers I will need to comprehend my observations fully.

To start our journey of understanding we do have to start at the scinetific truth that says "All matter is energy". Matter is made from energy through a process of compression and cooling.

Next is the observation that all burning is done in the air surrounding the matter, not within the matter itself. This is most obvious with the volatile fuels such as petrol, but it can also be observed when coal or wood burns. So, as the air around the matter gets heated, it changes qualities and therefore the matter that it produces also changes. By adding heat to the energy field, to the air surrounding the matter, we change the damp quality into dryness, the cold quality into heat and the heavy quality into lightness. That is why a heavy lump of cold wood turns into dry, warm and very light dust after the burning process. Heat always does this. And it is through changing the temperature of the energy field that the matter changes. That is why ice melts even when you don't put a fire underneath it, but just simply by heating the environment of the ice. The same process is responsible for the melting of a candle in a warm environment.

So, once again, the debris in the bottom of the candle after the burning process is produced by the change that has been brought about within the energy field the candle has been burned. The burning itself produces black smoke on the outside of the candle, which is very light and moves straight up in the air. The other bit that is produced is white smoke on the inside, the hollow side, of the candle, and this is travelling spiral-wise down the candle. This smoke cools down as it travels away from the heat source carrying the energetic changes made by the heat in its central spin. When this smoke is now also compressed, when it meets something on its travels like the obstruction of a filter or a narrowing of the passage way or a blocked passage, it will start to materialise out exactly what it is carrying in energetic form. It will only do this when it meets an obstruction, a compression of any kind.

The more dampness has turned into dryness, the more powder will materialise. The more coldness has turned into heat, the more fat will appear. That's the basic setting, but there is more.

The air in which these candles burn, the energy field it influences, comprises of the energy field of the person whose ear you have borrowed, but it also includes the energy field of the candle itself. Well yes, the candle is matter and therefore has its own energy field. (I am leaving out the consideration that some practitioners are closely involving themselves in the burning process by holding the candle) The heavier the matter the candle is made off, the heavier its energy field and therefore the more energy, heat, it will take to burn. This is the same principle in all burning processes: coal is heavier than wood, burns slower and requires more heat to allow the coal to burn. Both of these are heavier than petrol which is set alight very easily and burns quickly. So, the softer the candle, the more effective it will burn as the candle itself will take less heat to be changed. There are candles on the market that are so heavy they hardly produce any debris at all. Virtually all the heat produced by the burning proces is in this case taken up by the change going on in the material of the candle. Very little is left to make changes to the person.

I have stated before that the time of burning was one indicator for the effectiveness of the ear candle. In the light of these new considerations that needs to be modified, as we can now see that a very densely made candle will burn slowly, but at the same time be ineffective. An effective candle should create a lot of heat, both through the use of the proper building and burning materials and through its shape as the width of the candle determines the amount of heat at its centre (too wide and one loses heat and effectiveness). At the same time it should be light and soft in order not to divert too much energy to the candle itself. The idea is to allow as much heat as possible to affect changes within the person's energy field and this can only occur after the candle has used up whatever it needs in order to change its own matter.

We can now understand why the same effects cannot be gathered from burning ordinary candles within a person's energy field. Those candles use up almost all heat energy in their own transformation, having to burn off all that candle wax, which is far too heavy to leave any energy for other purposes such as heating up the room the candle stands in.

Once we realise the messages the debris in the candle are relating to us, maybe we can stop focussing the outside world, the innocent people who are looking to us to tell them what ear candling is all about, on stupid issues of "safety" when we obviously display ignorance about the process as a whole. Let's focus on producing effective candles that are safe to use, and let's then finally begin to produce safe handlers. Let's understand what makes a candle effective instead of implying that a flame coming out of one's ear is producing health on demand.

As it is part of this universe, there must be sense to the debris of an ear candle, as all of the rest of the universe has to make sense too. The earth is no longer flat. Carrying on believing the universe is playing a game of chance is ignoring all scientific proof. There is a simple set of rules, and there is a simple game of continuing evolution. The earth is round.

The truth is not changed by what I fail to observe.

Everyday I see with my own eyes that the earth is flat.

The truth I can see, when I look for it.
