Ear candles are being targeted as a dangerous device, potentially harming the individual’s health. It is part of the general census that non-approved therapies should be banned. Similar moves are made regarding homeopathy, osteopathy and chiropractics. Although there are hundreds of other therapies used in the modern western world, only a few come across a campaign to “inform” people of their dangers. The slogan used to justify the outpouring of specific stories, warning people about the potential dangers, is that “medicine is an evidence-based science”. One of the facts, published by the American Association of Medicine, is that their own investigation shows that the highest number of deaths per year can be directly contributed to medical intervention. Almost double the number of people die every year from complications and mistakes occurring with medical treatments and/or investigations than from cancer, the number two on their hit list.
If we are going to insist on using science as a base from which to work from, it would be good to take into account the “facts” science has established so far.
For almost a century, scientists have proven that everything in the universe is energy, that all matter is essentially compressed energy. Only a small proportion of the energy available within our universe is expressed in physical matter. The shape and form of this matter, as well as its functioning, is entirely determined by the energy from which it is made. Understanding the energy that creates the matter allows us to see how this energy could possibly be changed for it to result in a difference within the matter. Simple physics, a well-honoured science.
A human being is an energy field. The physical part is at the centre of a large field that brings together waves and frequencies of a great variety. How this centre functions depends on the interactions that go on within the more elusive part of the human being. The body expresses in physical terms these interactions and is therefore never the cause of any malfunctioning, but rather one of the effects.
All interactions between a human being and its outer-world are therefore also energetic. The result of these interactions we may observe in our physical world.
Another fact that appeared from the early days of quantum physics and relativity theories was that every observation changes the observed. Looking at something or testing something already helps to determine your end result by the way you look or test. It is said that “the observer is part of the observed”. This renders all standard medical tests invalid in relation to our health. On top of that, there is of course the evidence that we are looking at a living system which has the capability of completely changing the way it functions in a fraction of a moment, as demonstrated in the fight-or-flight response. Once again rendering all tests regarding its function before and after the response totally useless with regards to levels of “normal”, taken as a measure for health.
So, we may observe things, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that that is the only true observation that can be made. Very often the observation says more about the observer or the circumstances in which the observation has been made than about the true character of the observed. Not a very solid basis for “evidence-based science”!
How can we than relate this to ear candling?
First of all, it means that ear candling does not, can not, “clean out ears”. This advertising gimmick has served to sell a lot of candles for people looking for a non-invasive, non-painful way of removing earwax and blockages out of the outer ear canal. A few simple observations will show that nothing ever gets drawn from the ear.
In fact, ear candles do not alter the physical state of your tissues in any direct way at all. Ear candles work in the way our physicists state the universe works; it has an energetic influence on the human functioning. Fire has traditionally been a powerful way to deliver heat and dryness to a malfunctioning system, as well as lightening it. Fire is a powerful healing tool, and has been for many thousands of years; a well trusted and tested tool, at that. Ear candling is one way of using this power in healing. People have used this method in all major societies humans have created throughout the ages, and across the whole globe. It is a feat to deceive, to keep away from the truth, a whole population for a century. It is impossible not to get confronted with the truth in ten thousand years of human existence, all over the globe, in a great many different cultures unrelated to one another.
Thus, all the effects seen with ear candling are a result of energetic changes brought about by the burning of the candle at that moment in those circumstances. Hence, the effects vary widely, as we also experience with everything else.
Put in this framework we can now relate to problems resulting from the burning of candles in a person’s ear. As we are working with an open flame, we assume that adults are responsible people and capable of judging potential danger from the flame itself. If we are not then it is time to ban the sale and use of all ordinary candles too, as houses have burned down as a result of leaving candles to burn unsupervised. This is the first link in a chain.
The second one relates to the product itself. If the candle is heavily overburdened with wax there is a potential risk of it not burning up completely and running down the candle. The likelihood is it will run down the outer side of candle as that is where the wax bas been applied, not the inside, and therefore it won’t reach the eardrum. Another fact observed in a well-made candle is that within about 30 seconds of the burning process in progress, the small hole at the bottom of the candle will block up with debris, in itself stopping all other material including candle wax from running into the ear canal. As ear candles work energetically, you may, if you are extremely worried about the running of candle wax, simply block the bottom hole in the candle and the problem can of course never occur again!
The third one relates to the person receiving the ear candling. Indeed, we have seen what looked like burn marks on the eardrum. We need to modify how we express what we “see”. In scientific terms, it is only what we “believe” we see (simple physics). Wax that runs down an ordinary candle may feel hot but the truth is that it never burns our tissues to any degree. It may cause a sudden sensation of heat delivered to the tissues but there is no long-term damage to any tissues. In the case of ear candling, the wax will have a long way to run before it possibly could reach the eardrum. All the way down it would of course be cooling down. We have also already pointed out that later in the burning process the access to the ear canal will be blocked, increasing the likelihood of the physical pattern, as the running down of the hot wax, not being the explanation of this phenomenon.
All explanation of everything, a scientific fact, is always energetic. No different here! The extra energy that the fire of the candle brings to the energetic part of the human system is delivered to the most dense parts of the human, the physical body, via the ear. Hence, there is a high concentration of energy surrounding that part of the body. In a reasonably well-functioning system, this powerful energy will dissipate extremely quickly and the energy will flow away from the entry point across a large part of the field. However, if, for whatever reason, this energy flow is disturbed, partly blocked, one can experience a build-up of heat within the tissues. We see this situation occur when people have neck problems, blocked ear channels and various skull pressures. It is this change in energy balance, within an individual at a particular moment in time, that is responsible for the sensation of heat, and if not dealt with appropriately, as responsible therapists and adults should do, that problems may arise within the tissues.
We don’t ban cooking because somebody burns themselves or gets hurt by spitting fat. No, we educate them about the reality of the world they are living in.
It is wise to make the most of powerful tools.
It is also wise to train people in truth.
